I just passed the ICND1 on Friday. So I am no officially a CCENT. Which doesn't really mean that much, but I'm working towards a CCNA. I'll be taking the second exam in my next term in my grad program, so I'll start studying again in a couple months.
Until then, I guess I get to stick the cisco ccent icon on my resumes and stuff.
I'm really excited to be speaking at BYU-Idaho's Career Summit this week. I'll be speaking on career networking: how I networked, how I got my jobs, my experiences, and what I recommend for them. I need to update my resume with my latest Nitro experiences and CCENT. And my business cards.
Anyways, its lunch time. And I don't have to practice subnetting. YAY. Sammich time. Nom nom.

Ideas
Jake has an awesome idea. I don't want to release any details until we get it going, but I'm super excited. And life is pretty much awesome in just about every other way.

Comedy of Errors
So I got this email from a stranger today, who thought he was talking to someone named Kara in his family who was helping in preparations for his grandfather's funeral. Being that it was a slow day at work, I couldn't help myself from enjoying it a bit. To my surprise, he sent me a second email, still thinking it was the other girl. Here is the conversation.
Hi Kara,
My mom tells me you're going to give a speech tomorrow of all the grand kids memories of Grandpa. My best memories of Grandpa are at Loon Lake. He would spend all day out on the water driving that orange and white boat around even though he had caught his limit early in the day. Back on shore, he would clean the fish and Grandma would flour and fry them up. Yum. Anyway, it's not a specific memory, but a cumulation of all the good times at the lake.
See you tomorrow.
Michel

Hello Michel,
Sorry, but I'm not sure who's grandpa you're talking about. He sounds like a great grandpa though! I also regret to inform you that since I am not a member of your family and have no idea the time or place of the meeting, I will not likely be in attendance. I hope no one will be offended if I miss giving that speech, since I have no memories of my own regarding experiences with your grandfather to share. For the purpose of absolute clarity, may I ask your Grandpa's name and the state in which said meeting will be held?
I hope you have a wonderful day. If your grandfather has passed on, I am very sorry for your loss. He sounds a lot like my Grandpa.
God bless, and happy new years,
Kara

Hey Kara - you'll get a kick out of this email. Memory of Grandpa in my original email.
Michel

*In this email, he forwarded my response back to me. I'm flattered to know he thought it worth mentioning.

Michel,
I'm still confused and don't plan on seeing you tomorrow...if you really want to talk to me that bad, perhaps you should purchase a plan ticket for me? I could use an extended vacation. I'm assuming there's another Kara you wish to speak to, in which case, she sounds awesome. If she needs a clone for the day, I'm all booked for tomorrow but maybe later. I'll need a bit more advanced notice.
Thank you!

LOL!!! Wow...how many times can I get that email address wrong?!?! Oh that's funny! Thanks for your replies - we all got a really good laugh out of them.
The memory is for my grandfather's funeral tomorrow in Vancouver, BC. So if you're looking for an extended vacation Vancouver is beautiful this time of year :)
Happy new year and thanks again for the laugh!

Michel,
I'm glad you enjoyed it. For me, its just a side effect of being a bored engineer due to lack of current projects. I suppose this means I should cancel the doppelganger order? *sigh* very well then. I wish I could have gone, I love Vancouver BC! (I grew up in the Seattle area). But yes, that definitely confirms that he is not, in fact, my grandfather.
Anyways, its been a pleasure to be repeatedly confused for a member of your family! I feel like I fit right in. I'm glad you guys have a sense of humor. Silly things happened when my grandmother passed away, and it helped ease the pain. Kind of felt like she was teasing us, telling us to lighten up, showing us everything would be alright (I think you can tell where I got my sense of humor). Again, I am sorry for your loss.
Wish you all a happy New Years, and enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Wolfram Alpha
Also today I listened to a Podcast from TED by Stephen Wolfram, creator of Mathematica and Wolfram Alpha. I heard about Alpha months ago on a TWiT podcast, but I never tried it out. Its actually pretty darn intuitive-check it out at http://www.wolframalpha.com/
Type in anything you want to know. I typed in "International space station" and it fetched all the data concerning exactly where it is over the earth right now, its velocity and speed, and other awesome info. Right now the space station is hovering over Germany.
The idea of Wolfram Alpha is that anyone will be able to use normal English language to design a program that will retrieve the information you want, even if you're not quite sure. It can solve complex mathematical equations for you, research anything, and present information in a logical, intuitive manner. This really is a new step not just in search engines, but in computing in general. It really is capable of data analysis in a way never before thought of.
You can watch the video podcast here:
Pretty sweet!
Whoah...it also analyzes and composes music for you. You can create any music you want, analyse any music you want, and look at graphical representations of it. Apparently a lot of composers are already using it.
Interesting to note, he's trying to use this code engine to try to solve the theory of everything. No one has any clue how he's going to do that, including himself, but he's confident that within a decade we should have some answers.
Seadragon and Augmented Reality Maps
Microsoft is starting to pick up the pace. In 2006 Microsoft acquired Seadragon Zooming Technologies, which allows for seamless zooming in and out of any image online. They've incorporated this into Bing maps with some other really cool features, such as interlacing live video and Microsoft and viewer submitted images. There are a lot of cool new things.
Check out Seadragon here, and try any image link online for yourself. Pretty cool stuff.
Just throw in the image link at the bottom or play with theirs (My images didn't tend to zoom in or be as incredible as theirs, but this is a very promising technology).

Joseph Capek is hereby added to my list of favorite people.
So its the beginning of another semester. I'm taking fewer classes and only working on campus, as my internship has been completed. My classes are:
Database I (for my major)
Music Lit I (for my minor)
Women's Glee (for my minor)
English 201 (generals)
Science Foundations (generals)
So far, each of my classes seems surprisingly challenging and fun. At this point, I enjoy each of them and see myself continuing to do so.
I live in a two person apartment this semester. For about the first half hour by myself it was eerily quiet, until I realized how much homework I could accomplish in this type of environment. All unease and discomfort quickly left as I sat and studied for hours without stopping. YAY!!! I am so happy! I finally have the perfect setting for the focus I require. If I can keep this type of environment I will do well and graduate in December as I hope.
My roommate is intelligent, mature, and like-minded concerning studying habits and many other things. I love her to death. Last night (we were up until 2 so the conversation lacked intellect by that point) through a comedy of errors she ended up saying she was an androgenous goat. We then found out what exactly that meant, but at least she wasn't androgynous. These are two very different things. We have great times, but there is plenty of studying accomplished as well. The TV's only been on once, when I took a break from studying on Friday night to watch G.I. Joe.
Life is good. The Tongue-Tied Tribble Team revealed themselves after I had accused half the CIT department's students and made a very elaborate attempt to falsely accuse a good friend, who was of course innocent. It resulted in a very entertaining day, however, and the perpetrators got far more mileage out of the incident than they had planned. It turned out to be one of my favorite stories.
Well, I'm just trying to get more in the habit of updating this, as I have fallen behind in my journal writing. Wish me luck.
Oh, PS: Joseph Capek is the Russian who coined the word, "Robot." His brother used the idea in his play, which was the first public appearance of robots or the idea anyways in the 1920's. To learn about it yourself, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot
